Malabo, 10th of October, 2023 - The interministerial meeting of the Organization of Gas Exporting Countries (GECF), during its 25th session, held today in Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, approved the application of Mauritania to the join the organization as an observer member.
Our country’s membership in this organization, which brings together 19 countries representing 72% of the world’s total gas reserves, confirms the significant potential and promising prospects it has in the gas sector. This membership also constitutes an appreciation of the integrated vision developed by the government to ensure rational and responsible exploitation of gas resources in light of the new energy transition. Through its energy vision, the government aims to achieve full access to low-carbon, reliable and affordable energy.
Mauritania is preparing to start gas production from the Grand-Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) field, shared with Senegal, at the end of the first quarter of next year.
The Secretary General of the Ministry of Oil, Mines and Energy, Mr. Ahmed Salem Ould Bouheda, and the Director General of Hydrocarbons, Mr. Moustapha Béchir, represented Mauritania at the meeting.
The Gas Exporting Countries Forum brings together 19 countries representing more than 72% of global gas reserves and 42% of production. The organization aims to promote gas as a transition fuel by preserving the right of producing countries to exercise sovereignty over their resources.
